Curt Malawsky Joins Coaching Staff
General Manager Tosh Nishimura and the Fuel Coquitlam Adanacs are pleased to announce the addition of Curt Malawsky to its current coaching team. Mr. Malawsky will share bench duties with head coach Neil Doddridge and assistant coaches Dane Dobbie and Jon Harnett. Mr. Malawsky is currently the head coach of the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League. In his first year as Head Coach, Mr. Malawsky led the Calgary Roughnecks all the way to the Western Championship game where they lost in a close 14-13 decision to the Washington (now Vancouver) Stealth.
As the former bench boss of the junior Coquitlam Adanacs, Malawsky brings a wealth of coaching experience and leadership to the club. No stranger to the BCJALL, Malawsky guided many teams to the Minto Cup Championship, winning with the Burnaby Lakers in 2004 & 2005 and with the Coquitlam Adanacs in 2010. After the 2011 Minto Cup Championship, where Malawsky led the Adanacs to a second straight Minto Cup Final, he decided to step away from the junior game and spend more time with his young family, raising his sons Cody and Dawson with his wife Gilda.
Curt has maintained a relationship as director of player development with the Adanacs since stepping down as head coach. With the situation we found the organization in, the logical conclusion was to ask Curt if he was able to expand his role. Luckily, his work and family schedule work for the organization and Curt at this time. His family is excited about Curt joining the coaching team and helping guide the Adanacs to their goal of a Minto Cup.
"I am very excited and humbled for the opportunity the Adanacs have presented. With my family away on their annual Ontario trip and not due back until mid-August. This situation works both for my family, myself and the Adanacs. The opportunity to work with Neil, Dane, Jon and Tosh is an honour and a privilege".
"With Dane Dobbie (Langley Thunder WLA) and Jon Harnett (Victoria Shamrocks WLA) getting traded a few weeks ago, we had to look at the schedule and see how many games and practices the two assistant coaches were going to miss" added Nishimura. "Curt's return to our bench is both welcomed and exciting. Curt has pioneered the current Adanacs program over the past 4 years and our entire coaching staff currently work together for the Calgary Roughneck organization." Neil Doddrige is a scout for the Roughnecks while both Dobbie and Harnett are players on the team. "Adding Mr. Malawsky at this important time of the year will help to accentuate our existing coaches and be seamless for our players." added team president James Abbott.
Mr. Malawsky will attend practices this week and will behind the bench this Saturday when the Fuel Coquitlam Junior Adanacs take on the Victoria Shamrocks in the first game in the best of five series. Game time is 3:00PM (gates open at 2:15PM) at the Coquitlam Sports and Leisure Centre, 633 Poirier, Coquitlam, BC.
