Adanacs Edge Islanders in Game 1 of Finals

It has been 3 years since the Coquitlam Adanacs and Delta Islanders faced off in the finals, but that time has arrived again and game 1 of the BCJALL Finals went down at the Coquitlam Sports Centre tonight.

It’s fair to say the Islanders know they have a tough test ahead of them, but it’s not going to be easy for the Adanacs either and they knew they needed to come out hard in the first period, in which they did.

Just under 3 minutes into the first period, ColeShafer opened the scoring for the Adanacs and of course, that was just the beginning. The Adanacs added 3 more goals before the midway point as Chris Cloutier, Chase McIntyre and JordanMagnuson each scored to make it 4-0.

SpencerBromley finally got the Islanders on the board shortly after the Adanacs took a commanding 4-0 lead, but it didn’t add any momentum for the Islanders as 3 minutes later, Cloutier scored on the powerplay to make it 5-1 Adanacs.

The Islanders cut the Adanacs lead to 3 when EvanMessenger scored on the powerplay, but the Adanacs regained the 4-goal lead when ChallenRogers scored with 23 seconds left on the clock.

Either the Islanders got rid of all those first period jitters or the locker room was extremely vocal because they turned it up in the second period even though the Adanacs outshot them 21-11.

The Islanders made it a 6-4 game when TreLeclaire and BradHofmann scored within the first 6 minutes of the period. JordanGilles then made it a 1-goal game with 8:22 left in the period.

With under 5 minutes to go, both teams exchanged a goal each as Jean-Luc Chetner and Leclaire scored to make it a 7-6 game heading into the third period.

In a very disciplined third period where we only saw one penalty, it ended up being costly to the Islanders.

ChaseFraser tied the game up with 14:34 remaining in the third period, but remember that costly penalty? Well, it was actually Adanacs’ Shafer who received 2 minutes for crease play, but unfortunately for the Islanders, it wasn’t them who scored on that penalty. Chetner scored shorthanded to give the Adanacs an 8-7 lead at the halfway point of the period.

The Islanders did get that goal back when Fraser scored with 6:06 left on the clock, but just as he crushed the Salmonbellies dreams in game 3 of the semi-finals, Shafer made up for the penalty and scored with 3:57 remaining in the game and the Adanacs hung on to the lead, taking game 1 by a score of 9-8.
